The Power and Endurance of Film

I worry about our photographic history, I must admit.

We leave too many photos on iPhones or computers or tablets and never print them out.  Eventually they die, dissipating in the Ethernet, never to be seen again.

Not so with film, and here's proof of that.  If you've never been to this website before, check out The Rescued Film Project at http://www.rescuedfilm.com/

Particularly strong is the most recent find, 31 rolls of undeveloped film from a WWII soldier.  It's a beautiful thing when you can find something 70 years old and bring it to life again.

A few years ago I found a 4 x 5 negative at my grandparents' house.  I took it in the darkroom here at Sawtooth and printed it.  It was a perfect picture from 1920 of my grandparents when they first met, young and in love.  It is priceless to me, as no one in my family had ever seen the photo.  And I was able to print it over 90 years after it was first taken.

Ah, the power of film.

If you've never taken a darkroom class here at Sawtooth, you most definitely should.  Dave Dulaney is currently teaching a darkroom class at night, and Mary Bailey Thomas is about to begin her daytime darkroom classes with Salem College.

If you are interested in knowing more about our darkroom classes, feel free to contact me.  We're keeping it alive here at Sawtooth!

YES!

Boy am I excited!

We just received a very large grant to re-do our computer lab!  We will be purchasing 12 new PCs, 12 new Macs, new tables and chairs, new printer, new scanner, new software: the works!  We will also be creating a studio space with proper lighting equipment and props.  The goal with the photo studio is to be able to rent it by the hour, in case you need a studio space in which to shoot, but don't have your own.

Lots of good things for 2013, so stay tuned all you shutterbugs!

Happy new year indeed!

Until we meet again,
Amanda

Photo Challenge!

Yes, folks, we are bringing back the blog to introduce our new photo challenge!  For those involved with the Sawtooth Photo League, we are introducing a photographic challenge each month that you can choose to participate in or not.  It may be a phrase, an iconic photograph, or a piece of art.  It is your challenge to interpret the assignment photographically, either literally or in your own style.  Use it as an opportunity to stretch your imagination and your photography skills, but most of all, have fun with it!

For our December 15th meeting, we are using a familiar holiday phrase as our challenge: But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight...

You can interpret that phrase photographically in any way that you would like!  I'm also going to throw a twist and add a photograph to recreate.  This one's from It's a Wonderful Life:

You can choose to recreate the phrase, the photo, both, or none!  It's up to you!  Good luck, and I'll see you Photo Leaguers on December 15th!

Until we meet again,
Amanda
